I started this site as a side project to become more engaged with design and art as a whole; to learn and be inspired and to hopefully teach and inspire others, and a way to look into different lifestyles and experiences from the perspectives of the people who live them.
Book of Lions is the chronicles of designer DickieJones33, otherwise known as Chris Spann.
This site is a source for inspiration. My goal is to make you think. To engage you in aspects of design and things that may or may not be relevant to you; as well as bring new knowledge on things you may not have known about otherwise. By sharing my perspective, I invite you to agree or disagree, but to properly discuss these subjects in a way that we may all benefit and learn from one another.
This site is a source of information. For all articles written, I make an effort to do as much research as possible. This takes time on some topics. If you notice something that is misrepresented or incorrect on the site, please feel free to contact me so that it can be corrected. I am humble enough to admit when I am wrong. However, please do not post negative comments or comments that bring little or no substance to the subject being discussed. It is a waste of both of our time.
This site is a place to hear what designers have say. I send out a lot of interview questions. It is easy to just mention something on a site. For Book of Lions, I am going straight to the sources to get their perspectives on things. I try to create questions that are different from the typical interview questions. I have no hesitation in asking something that I know might possible strike a nerve with someone in the design community. This is only a means to bring things to light that everyone is aware of that no one cares to discuss. The elephant in the room so to speak. I feel that by asking the right questions and not interfering with the interviews, I am able to remove some of my own personal biases.
I personally pick and choose who to interview. The interviews are not always done with people you may be familiar with, but people that I have found to have an interesting story.
This site is a heavy in content. Just as the name implies, the content written on this site is very wordy, as a book would be. With the amount of content included in each article, I try to give special attention to the layout so that the content is digestible in the easiest way possible. I have taken a lot of inspiration from magazine and print layout for this reason.
This site is not a news site. I am not trying to keep up with current events. Rather, I write about things that I personally find interesting and relative to design and my life as a designer. Some of the content may be a bit older to some, but may be completely new to others. If there is something you would like to share or learn more about, please let me know.
This site is not an authority on any aspect of design. The content here is based on experiences I have had and my own perspectives. I am always open to new insight. If there is a tutorial, it will be based on how I (or the respected designer) approach and execute techniques. If there is a more efficient and effective way to do something mentioned, please share. Many times in design there are so many different ways to do things that we all find our own methods. I have learned so many shortcuts and techniques by simply working next to other designers. Design will always be a learning process, and I have found one of the best design resources to be other designers, plain and simple.
As always, if there is anything you would like to see on the site or discuss feel free to contact me. In the meantime, welcome to the Book of Lions.
